This sculptural two-arm candelabrum was produced in Vallauris during the postwar period, when local ateliers expanded beyond tableware into decorative and architectural objects for the home. Compact and heavily modeled, the form draws on historic candle designs—reduced and reinterpreted through mid-century ceramic production.
The piece is fully modeled rather than thrown, with integrated scrolls, lobes, and a stepped base forming a dense, grounded silhouette. A dark brown to near-black glaze with ochre and metallic breaks activates the surface, pooling deeply in recesses and thinning across raised edges to emphasize volume and relief. The glaze is used structurally, not decoratively, allowing the firing to articulate the form.
Candelabra of this type were produced in Vallauris alongside lamps, wall sconces, and ornamental ceramics, often unsigned and intended as functional objects with strong visual presence. Both practical and sculptural, this example reflects Vallauris’ mid-century approach: traditional forms reworked through weight, glaze chemistry, and expressive modeling.
A confident, characterful piece that sits comfortably between utility and sculpture, and a strong representation of Vallauris ceramic production from the 1950s–60s.
