Aleyè introduces Horst Schmal, the design practice of Simon Schmalhorst, based near Biarritz, France. Working through small-scale series of objects, his work explores form, material, and light with an emphasis on restraint, longevity, and local production.

Trained in graphic design and photography, Simon’s practice moves between commissioned work and self-initiated projects in product design and craftsmanship. His objects emerge through an iterative, hands-on process, where making informs form and decisions are refined over time.

Each piece is produced locally in limited quantities, shaped by attention to use and material behaviour rather than trend or excess. The result is a body of work that favours quiet presence and atmosphere: objects designed to settle naturally into everyday life.
