A theatrical study where form becomes gesture. From a compact, grounded silhouette extends a sharp, elongated beak of a spout, sharply counterbalanced by a high, looping arc of a handle. The effect is distinctly avian, almost zoomorphic, as if the essence of a creature had been captured mid-movement and rendered in clay.
The design cleverly traces its ancestry to ancient pouring vessels, yet in Ponti’s modernist re-imagining, ritual function is pared down to essential, almost geometric clarity: a sphere truncated by a cone, punctuated by a sweeping arc. The glaze—a jet black achieved through the same bucchero-style firing that fascinated Ponti—is profoundly light-absorbing, swallowing incidental detail to ensure that the purity of the silhouette alone speaks. Issued in 1997, this is not a mere reproduction but a thoughtful resurrection of Ponti’s dialogue with history. When held, it presents a delightful paradox: feeling heavy and substantial in its materiality, yet simultaneously airy and light in its graphic outline—a sculptural drawing realized in three dimensions.
