This candle holder is carved from solid Italian alabaster, produced in the 1970s when the material was widely used for lighting objects that emphasized atmosphere over illumination. The cylindrical form is precisely hollowed to accommodate a tealight, while the removable cover lowers over the flame to diffuse light evenly through the stone.
The alabaster’s natural translucency is central to the design. When lit, the surface warms and reveals organic veining and mineral clouding, making each piece inherently unique. The base is cut as a shallow disc, stabilizing the form and visually anchoring the vertical cylinder. All surfaces are smoothly finished, with clean edges that reinforce the object’s restrained, architectural character.
Typical of Italian production of the period, the piece relies on material quality and proportion rather than decoration. It sits between functional candle holder and ambient light object, designed to soften space rather than dominate it. Subtle, tactile, and materially rich, it is equally effective as a standalone object or as part of a grouped display.
